Sweet Peas & Apple Pie

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound

A time for everything

To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven

Ecclesiastes 3:1 NKJV

Well, here we are, writing about my growing love for film. I say “love” as opposed to “passion” because I am not quite passionate about it yet. Simply put, I am enjoying it and I think especially after our recent trip to the motherland, there was something about the look of the photo and how it made me feel. It was very much of a nostalgic feeling. Don’t get me wrong, phone photos are fine too, but once you delve into the film world, waiting for your photos to be developed, wondering in the moment if you got a good shot, and finally seeing it in person, it’s a whole process and journey worth every single step.

For one, taking photos in my film cameras, has taught me patience, along with other things that has and continue to show me that good things happen to those who wait, or perhaps a more fitting saying in this context is “all good things, take time.” As a baker of bread, I learned this first hand and look at where are now with it. That will be a separate post, but it really has shown me that “there is a season, a time for everything…” King Solomon wrote these words in the book of wisdom called Ecclesiastes in the Bible.

And for many other various reasons I can think of, the look of a film photo is far more superior than what we can get through digital and phone cameras. Again, I am not bashing or hating on any of these forms of photo taking things and getting prints from them, it’s just different and very much worth it.

So that was a long bout to simply tell you that I am enjoying taking photos with my film cameras, yes I have multiple ones in which I will have to share in a separate post, and you know what they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, so let me take you back to where to the beginning, and I hope this will motivate you to pick up that thing that you have become impatient with and see if it’s worth it.

Sleeping Golden. Julian, CA. April 2024. 35mm Nikormat.

Julian holds a very special place in my heart. This is where we spent our first few days as a newly married couple and where I started shooting film. God knows I had no idea what I was doing, let alone what aperture or shutter speed was. I still don’t have it down confidently, but I can put one or two things together and figure it out without pestering my poor husband.

You may ask how did I get started with this? Well from my one and only husband. He’s not so poor when I am not pestering him, he’s really quite amazing. A leader and teacher, and I, a poor, miserable student who is very impatient. I really don’t know how I got blessed with such a patient husband. I really am so, so blessed and grateful to God for giving me His best. Thank you God 🙂

Julian Garage. December 2023. Mamiya.

As you can see I had my camera around my neck and my sweet husband was the one who took this photo. He’s using a different camera than me, and I’ll have to share to that in a different post as well. So many things to talk about!

I took this one on his and how it turned out good, was all him, but one can still mess it up in the process, but it turned our great and might I dare say handsomely 😉

As I am looking at these photos, I can’t help but miss this place. The great outdoors, the fresh air, blue skies, the quiet, simplicity, and the beauty that only one can truly behold when it’s home. I miss home. I don’t think I’ve ever missed something more than being away from home for almost a year now. We are coming back in two months, but in my heart and mind, I am no longer here where I am currently at, but instead, I am home. Back to what I know and familiar with and where I am really from. Oddly enough, when we went back to the motherland, the place where I was born, I had no sort of connection or affinity to the people or culture besides my grandma. I may look like one of them, but deep down inside, this was not where I belong. I think especially as Christians, we are always going to feel this way wherever we are because our ultimate destination once it’s said and done is with Christ. Needless to say, I cannot wait to go back and I only hope and pray that these months fly by and when I wake, I can see clear blue skies and breathe in the fresh air, again. So until then, we continue where we are hope for better days to come.

Dad at the Old Well. Julian, CA. April 2024.

Closing this little post with this photo of my dad and my mom in the corner, in which I just realized that she’s there! Oh my sweet little mom 🙂 Home is where your parents are.

Have a wonderful day, wherever you are, and give someone you love a call.

A time to be born,
And a time to die;
A time to plant,
And a time to pluck what is planted;
